Evil Japanese idol group AKB48 have been confirmed for the main villain role in “Star Trek 3,” according to industry news source Variety.
J.J. Abrams, who is producing the new Star Trek adventure told Variety that the idol outfit fulfilled many of the qualities required for a good Star Trek villain.
“When we were discussing plot ideas for the third installment” Abrams commented, “we knew that we needed to up our game and present a villain that was much more evil and unpleasant than Khan, the Klingons or the Borg. Obviously AKB48 being evil in themselves fulfilled that requirement”.
Early reports say that the script has had to go through several revisions already “to tone down the evilness of AKB48” in a bid to secure a PG rating.
Justin Lin is directing the pic, with Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana and Anton Yelchin all on board to return.
