A new anime TV series based on the classic manga series Ghost In The Shell is due to air in July 2026. Shirow Masamune’s 1989-91 manga has inspired several anime adaptations, including Mamoru Oshii’s 1995 legendary anime film.
Set in a near future, it deals with the rise of computer technology and the interface between human brains and cybernetic systems. Stories revolve around the chief character Major Motoko Kusanagi, a cybernetic human employed as the field commander of Public Security Section 9, a fictional anti-cybercrime law-enforcement division.
The new anime series is produced by Science Saru, directed by Mokochan, series composition and episode scripts by Toh Enjoe, with character designs and chief animation direction by Shuhei Handa. It is set to premiere in July 2026 on the Ka-Anival!! programming block on Kansai TV, Fuji TV and their affiliates.
The musical producers include Taisei Iwasaki, known for his work on Ryuu to Sobakasu Hime, Hateshinaki Scarlet, Giant God Warrior Appears in Tokyo, Spriggan and more. In addition, Ryo Konishi, who served as the music director the Osaka World Expo and produces for artists such as Chara+YUKI, Mrs. Green Apple, TOMOO and more, will be collaborating with US-based composer Yuki Kanesaka, who produced the music for TV anime Dr. Stone.
“In middle school, I came across a magazine with an illustration of Motoko Kusanagi inside” commented Taisei Iwasaki on discovering Ghost in the Shell, “That was the moment when I discovered Ghost in the Shell. Its unique touch and color set it apart from other works. Even the author’s name, Masamune Shirow, captivated me. I was stunned. I’ve since encountered the series in various forms. Now, I am truly honored to be a part of this project and its long history.”
