A trip to Bisneyland…
Our favourite idol group BiS (Brand-New Idol Society) today mark their first release on the Avex label with the release of new single ‘PPCC’.
It’s been an interesting path for the girls who present a much more edgier image of an idol group than their contemporaries. Their debut release ‘My Ixxx’ courted controversy with its infamous ‘nude’ video. Plus there was the whole staged event of adopting a more wholesome approach – even going so far as to film a fake PV teaser for the single ‘Idol’ which showed the BiS girls dressed as maids (which can be viewed here: http://v.youku.com). The teaser videos for ‘PPCC’ were no less controversial, showing the BiS members kissing and licking each other.
BiS also issued a special limited edition vinyl release titled ABiSCDiS, featuring remixes of previous singles ‘My Ixxx’ and ‘primal’. The release also featured two songs from their subunit DiS.
More recently, ahead of their Avex debut, BiS held a free live event titled Mada Major Janaimon!! at Shinjuku LOFT in Tokyo. Dressed in the swimsuits that they wore in the ‘PPCC’ video, the girls took to crowd surfing as they performed ‘PPCC’ and also new song ‘CRACK CRACK’ and a cover version of TRF’s ‘survival dAnce ~no no cry more~’ (both of which also feature on the ‘PPCC’ release).
PPCC is a great song to mark their major label debut. With its dramatic film score intro through its slow burn opening verse (which recalls ‘YELL!!’ from the original eponymous BiS album) and finally the euphoric chorus of “Peropero Chuchu!” – actually Japanese onomatopoeia for licking (peropero) and kissing (chuchu). It’s a great tune for jumping around a dance floor to and it’s clear that BiS are continuing to develop as an outfit. It’s J-Pop with an edge and it’s exactly the sort of thing that keeps the contemporary Japanese music scene interesting.
With their move to a major label, we’re going to be very keen to see what BiS do next. It’s a safe bet that it won’t be anything ordinary…
